A composed and disciplined performance saw India outclass hosts Australia 2-0 in the third match to take a 2-1 lead in the four match women’s hockey friendly series, here on Friday. In a match defined by tactical structure and defensive discipline, both teams struggled to break through in the opening half, with the first two quarters ending goalless despite intense midfield battles and repeated circle entries.

The breakthrough finally came in the third quarter when Sonam , showing sharp awareness inside the striking circle, converted in the 36th minute to give India a crucial lead. The goal shifted momentum firmly in India’s favour as they began to control possession and dictate the tempo of the game.

India doubled their advantage in the final quarter through Lalremsiami , who struck in the 49th minute to put the visitors in a commanding position. After taking a two goal cushion, India displayed strong defensive organisation, absorbing pressure and cutting off Australia’s attacking channels with disciplined structure and timely interceptions.

Despite late efforts from the hosts, the Indian defence stood firm to secure a well earned victory and a vital series advantage. With this win, India now lead the series 2-1 after having lost the opener 1-2 , before bouncing back strongly in the second match where they won via shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

The tour has highlighted India’s growing consistency, particularly in defence and midfield control, as they continue to build momentum ahead of major international assignments. The ongoing exposure in Australia is being viewed as crucial preparation for the upcoming Women’s Nations Cup in Auckland from June 15-21 .

The tour also carries long term significance with the FIH Pro League promotion race and qualification pathways for the World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands later this year in focus, as India aim to strengthen their position on the global stage.
