India End Unity Cup Run with 0-1 Loss to Zimbabwe in Third Place Play Off
India’s Unity Cup campaign ended in disappointment on Saturday as they lost 0 to 1 against Zimbabwe in the third place play off in London, finishing the tournament without a win in their final match.
A 33rd minute penalty by Prince Dube proved decisive, giving Zimbabwe third place while India struggled to find the net throughout the game.
After a 0 to 2 defeat to Jamaica in the semi final , head coach Khalid Jamil made four changes to the starting lineup. Vikram Partap Singh, Rahim Ali, Macarton Nickson and Ricky Shabong were brought in, with Shabong making his first start after his international debut as a substitute in the previous match.
India began with early intent, but Zimbabwe gradually took control with sharper attacking play and better possession. The Indian defence, led by Sandesh Jhingan , stood firm in the opening stages, including an early clearance inside the box and a crucial header in the 15th minute.
India’s best first half chance came in the 29th minute when Ricky Shabong played a well timed pass to release Vikram Partap Singh , but Zimbabwe captain John Takwara produced a superb sliding challenge to block the opportunity.
The breakthrough came soon after when Washington Gift Navaya was brought down inside the box by Farukh Choudhary , leading to a penalty. Prince Dube converted calmly, sending Gurpreet Singh Sandhu the wrong way to make it 1 to 0 in the 33rd minute.
Zimbabwe nearly added a second before half time, but Sandhu made a strong save to keep India in the contest.
After the break, India showed more urgency with Lallianzuala Chhangte and Vikram leading attacks. The best chance came in the 60th minute when Chhangte’s powerful strike was pushed onto the post by the Zimbabwe goalkeeper.
Late efforts from Edmund Lalrindika and a senior debut for Nikhil Barla in the 89th minute were not enough as Zimbabwe held on for victory.
India will now travel to Tajikistan for two friendly matches on June 5 and 9.
