India Impress with Bat, Weather Steals the Show
Rain had the final say in the opening T20I between India and England, but not before Shreyas Iyer , Abhishek Sharma and Shivam Dube produced an impressive batting display to power the visitors to 189/7 at Chester-le-Street on Wednesday.
The first match of the five-game series was eventually abandoned without a ball being bowled in England's chase as persistent rain and a wet outfield made further play impossible. The washout meant both teams shared a point, leaving the series level at 0-0 heading into the second T20I in Manchester on July 4.
India's innings began on a shaky note as they slumped to 6/2 inside the first three overs. The early dismissals of Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan handed England the advantage, but the visitors responded in style through a crucial partnership between captain Iyer and the in-form Abhishek.
Abhishek launched a blistering counterattack, smashing 59 off just 24 balls and bringing up his half-century in only 20 deliveries. The left-hander's knock was significant beyond the match itself, as he became the fastest batter from a Full Member nation to complete 100 sixes in T20 Internationals . He also set a new world record for becoming the fastest player to reach 1,500 T20I runs in terms of balls faced , underlining his growing stature in international cricket.
At the other end, Iyer anchored the recovery with a composed 68 off 47 balls , registering his first T20I fifty as India's captain. His innings combined aggression and maturity, ensuring India rebuilt strongly after the early collapse.
The late charge came from Shivam Dube , whose unbeaten 42 off 21 balls lifted India to a challenging total. Dube's powerful hitting in the death overs ensured the visitors finished with momentum and appeared well placed to test England's batting lineup.
For England, Saqib Mahmood was the standout bowler with figures of 3/33 , while the hosts would have been encouraged by their early breakthroughs.
However, the much-anticipated chase never materialized. Rain that began towards the end of India's innings intensified during the interval, forcing officials to abandon the contest. While the result was washed away, India will take plenty of positives from the performances of Iyer , Abhishek and Dube as the series moves to Manchester for the second encounter.
