India, Indonesia Deepen Strategic Ties with Focus on Defence and Semiconductors

India and Indonesia on Sunday reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, with a focus on expanding cooperation in defence manufacturing, semiconductors, strategic trade, and maritime security , during the eighth India-Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting held in the national capital.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar hosted Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono for wide-ranging discussions covering political, economic, security, and regional issues. The talks reviewed the full spectrum of the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership , which has witnessed steady growth in recent years.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, both sides explored opportunities to deepen collaboration in sectors including defence and security, maritime affairs, trade and investment, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, energy, digital technologies, critical minerals , connectivity, and education. Particular emphasis was placed on emerging areas such as semiconductor supply chains , advanced manufacturing, and resilient trade networks amid evolving global economic conditions.

The ministers also exchanged views on regional developments, India-ASEAN engagement , and multilateral cooperation. Discussions reportedly touched upon the economic implications of ongoing tensions in West Asia and their impact on global trade and energy markets.

Jaishankar highlighted the momentum generated by recent high-level exchanges between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto , noting that bilateral relations continue to expand across both traditional and emerging sectors.

Indonesia remains a key pillar of India's Act East Policy , with the two countries seeking to leverage their strategic geographic positions and growing economic complementarities. Analysts view the renewed focus on defence manufacturing, semiconductor cooperation, and strategic trade as part of broader efforts to strengthen supply-chain resilience and enhance economic security in the Indo-Pacific region .
