Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday departed for Australia after concluding his three-day Indonesia visit , the first leg of his three-nation tour that also includes Australia and New Zealand . The visit focused on strengthening cooperation in trade, defence, maritime security, critical minerals and technology amid evolving geopolitical challenges.

During his talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto , both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership . The two countries signed 14 agreements covering critical areas such as critical minerals, steel supply chains, medicines, education, space cooperation, telecommunications, research, innovation and food security .

The leaders stressed the need for a free, open and peaceful Indo-Pacific and called for a zero-tolerance approach against terrorism , urging action against globally designated terrorist groups.

A major outcome of the visit was the agreement to jointly develop Sabang Port , a strategically important port overlooking the Strait of Malacca. The partnership is expected to strengthen maritime cooperation between India and Indonesia.

Modi and Prabowo also visited the historic Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta and launched a joint conservation initiative for the UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting the cultural ties between the two nations.

At a diaspora event in Jakarta, Modi highlighted India’s “reform, perform and transform” approach and said India’s self-reliance efforts could support growth across Indonesia and the ASEAN region. President Prabowo praised India’s civilisational influence on Indonesia and recalled his role as the chief guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations in 2025 .

Modi has now travelled to Melbourne, Australia (July 8-10) , where he will meet Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to discuss cooperation in defence, trade, investment, education, mobility and people-to-people ties . He is also scheduled to interact with the Indian diaspora, further strengthening bilateral relations under the India-Australia strategic partnership.
