India Secures Full Three-Man Javelin Final Berth Led by Neeraj Chopra

Defending champion Neeraj Chopra led a flawless Indian show in the men's javelin qualification at the Commonwealth Games, comfortably advancing to the final alongside compatriots Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh to keep India's medal hopes firmly alive. With all three Indian throwers making the cut for the 12-man medal round, the country will head into the final with one of its strongest contingents in the event.

Neeraj Chopra, the two-time Olympic medallist and reigning Commonwealth Games champion, finished fifth in the qualification round with a best throw of 79.61 metres. Rohit Yadav secured ninth place with 78.37m, while Yashvir Singh followed closely in 10th with 78.36m, ensuring a full Indian representation in the medal contest.

Competing as the last thrower in each round, Chopra adopted a calculated approach. Having already done enough to qualify, he chose not to take his third and final attempt, conserving energy for the final. His measured strategy reflected confidence rather than concern, as the qualification round was largely about securing a place in the medal event.

The competition witnessed unusually modest distances, with none of the 18 competitors managing to breach the automatic qualification mark of 84 metres. Consequently, the top 12 athletes progressed based on their rankings. Reports indicated that gusty wind conditions made it difficult for throwers to register longer distances, turning the qualification into a tactical rather than power-driven contest.

The final is expected to feature another high-profile clash between Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem, who also advanced to the medal round. Their rivalry has become one of the most anticipated contests in international athletics following memorable battles at the Olympics and World Championships.

Chopra enters the final as one of the favourites, aiming to successfully defend the Commonwealth title he claimed at the 2018 Gold Coast Games with a winning throw of 86.47 metres. Since then, he has established himself as one of India's greatest athletes, winning Olympic gold at Tokyo, Olympic silver at Paris, and the World Athletics Championships title in 2023. He is also a two-time Asian Games gold medallist and India's national record holder, having become the first Indian to cross the coveted 90-metre mark with a throw of 90.23 metres at the 2025 Doha Diamond League.

With three Indians in the final and Chopra chasing another Commonwealth crown, India will look to capitalise on its strong presence in the event and add another athletics medal to its campaign.
