India Shows Promise but Misses Swimming Podium, Australia Clinches Gold in Style

The Indian men's 4x200m freestyle relay team delivered a spirited performance in the Commonwealth Games swimming competition, significantly improving on their qualification timing before finishing sixth in the final on Sunday.

The quartet of Dhakshan Shashikumar, Aneesh Sunil Kumar Gowda, Aryan Nehra, and Srihari Nataraj clocked 7:29.84, shaving nearly 10 seconds off their heat timing of 7:39.48. Despite the remarkable improvement, the Indian swimmers found themselves up against some of the world's strongest relay teams and were unable to challenge for a medal.

Australia once again showcased its dominance in the pool, claiming the gold medal in a Commonwealth Games record time of 7:01.47. England secured the silver medal with 7:04.98, while Wales completed the podium after finishing in 7:09.59. Malaysia placed fifth in 7:23.72, narrowly ahead of India.

Although the result highlighted the gap between India and the traditional swimming powerhouses, the relay team's substantial improvement reflected the steady progress Indian swimming has been making on the international stage.

Earlier in the day, India had qualified for the final by finishing third in Heat 2, behind Australia and England. With Canada not starting, all four teams in the heat advanced to the eight-team final.

The qualification race itself was closely contested, with India locked in a thrilling battle against Jersey. After briefly slipping behind during the latter stages, the Indian quartet produced a strong finish, reclaiming third place around the 700m mark and comfortably booking a place in the final.

Across both heats, India entered the medal race as the fifth-fastest qualifier, trailing only Australia, Scotland, England and Wales. While a podium finish ultimately proved out of reach, the team's improved timing and determined performance offered encouraging signs for the future of Indian swimming.
