India Signs Rs 53,866-Crore Deals for Eight Next-Generation Navy Warships
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed contracts worth Rs 53,866.50 crore with two state-run shipbuilders for the construction of eight Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) for the Indian Navy, marking a significant step towards strengthening indigenous defence manufacturing and maritime security.
The contracts were signed with Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL). While GRSE will construct five warships, GSL will build the remaining three.
The project is significant as the vessels will be indigenously designed by the Indian Navy and constructed by Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) selected through a competitive process. It represents an important milestone in India's efforts to strengthen domestic warship design and manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign defence suppliers.
The eight corvettes will feature advanced missiles, modern weapons systems and sophisticated sensor suites, enabling operations across air, surface and sub-surface domains. Their multi-role capabilities will support anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine operations, coastal defence, littoral combat and maritime surveillance.
The vessels are expected to strengthen India's ability to detect maritime threats, protect its coastline, safeguard vital international shipping routes and maintain a stronger naval presence across the Indian Ocean Region. They will also complement the Navy's existing fleet and help distribute operational responsibilities among different classes of warships.
Beyond naval security, the project is expected to generate substantial employment and support India's industrial ecosystem. It is projected to create approximately 72 lakh person-days of employment in shipyards and another 460 lakh person-days in ancillary industries and MSMEs over the next 10 years.
The initiative will also provide opportunities for domestic manufacturers, private industries and technology companies, encouraging indigenous innovation and greater participation in defence production.
The project reflects India's broader Atmanirbhar Bharat vision of developing advanced military technologies, strengthening strategic autonomy and emerging as a major global defence manufacturing hub.
