India Unveils Junior Women's Hockey Squad, Chanu Named Captain for Asia Cup

Midfielder Khaidem Shileima Chanu has been named captain of the 18-member Indian junior women's hockey team for the Junior Women's Asia Cup, which will be held in Moqi , China, from August 30 to September 13.

The tournament is considered an important stepping stone for India's emerging hockey talent, with the squad aiming to make a strong impression against the continent's top teams. The match schedule and pool allocations will be announced closer to the tournament.

India enters the competition after completing a valuable exposure tour of the United Kingdom, where an extended squad gained international match experience and fine-tuned its preparations. The tour helped the coaching staff assess players under competitive conditions before finalising the squad.

Head coach Tim White, who took charge of the junior women's team earlier this year, praised the players for earning their places through hard work and consistent performances.

White said he was proud of the dedication and determination shown by the youngsters over the past few months, adding that the squad has developed significantly both individually and collectively. He described the Asia Cup as an ideal opportunity for the players to measure themselves against the best teams in Asia while continuing their journey toward bigger international ambitions.

The coach also expressed confidence that the team possesses the talent, discipline and character needed to make India proud, urging the players to approach every match with confidence and focus.

The squad features goalkeepers Nidhi and Engil Harsha Rani Minz, while the defensive unit includes Puja Sahoo, Supriya, Pooja Malik, Parwati Topno and Madhu. Alongside captain Khaidem Shileima Chanu, the midfield will feature Tanuja Toppo, Binima Dhan, Roshni Aind and Geeta Yadav. The forward line comprises Lalrinpuii, Purnima Yadav, Sukhveer Kaur, Krishna Sharma, Sanika Chandrakant Mane and Madhu Sidar.

With a balanced squad and valuable overseas preparation behind them, India will look to mount a strong challenge for the continental title in China.
