An Indian caregiver in Israel has been honoured by Israel Police with a certificate of appreciation for “good citizenship” after helping foil an alleged con attempt targeting a 95-year-old Holocaust survivor in the Carmel area.

The caregiver, identified as Hira (Hiraben), has been working as a nursing caregiver for the 95-year-old woman. According to Israeli media reports, Hiraben has been in Israel for only a few months but acted quickly when a woman allegedly arrived at the elderly resident’s apartment posing as a nurse from Clalit Health Services.

Hiraben reportedly recognised that something was wrong and remained calm while protecting the elderly woman from the suspected con artist. She documented the incident, prevented the suspect from getting close to the woman and alerted the police.

Her actions helped investigators pursue the case, with an indictment filed against the suspect. The suspect’s detention was also extended until the conclusion of the legal proceedings, according to reports.

At a ceremony held on Wednesday at the Coastal District Police headquarters, investigators from the Haifa police station presented Hiraben with the certificate in recognition of her actions. Investigator Nofar Paz thanked her in the presence of the elderly woman and her family.

The incident highlights the risks faced by elderly people, who are often targeted by criminals using convincing identities and false claims to gain access to their homes. In this case, the caregiver’s vigilance prevented the alleged fraudster from getting close to the intended victim.

Israel Police’s recognition also underlines the importance of community vigilance in preventing crimes against vulnerable people. Hiraben’s response was particularly notable because she had only recently arrived in Israel and was still relatively new to the country.

The case comes amid broader concerns over crimes targeting older and vulnerable residents. Israeli authorities have previously stressed the importance of reporting suspicious activity and preventing unauthorised individuals from gaining access to elderly people living alone.

For Hiraben, what began as part of her everyday responsibility as a caregiver ended with official recognition from the police. Her quick thinking and courage helped protect a Holocaust survivor and played a role in bringing the alleged con attempt to the attention of investigators.
