Indian Caregiver Rajiv Acharya Dies In Israel, 31-Year-Old Suspect Arrested
An Indian national, Rajiv Acharya, has died in Israel, with Israeli authorities arresting a suspect as an investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding his death. The Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv confirmed Acharya’s death and said it remains in close contact with Israeli authorities.
In a social media post on Wednesday, the embassy identified the deceased as Acharya and expressed deep sorrow over his tragic death. It said Israeli authorities had informed the mission that a suspect had been arrested and that an investigation was underway to establish the full facts and circumstances of the incident.
Further reports have provided additional details about the case. Acharya, a 40-year-old caregiver from Kalimpong in West Bengal, had reportedly been working in Israel for around five years. According to The Indian Express, he was stabbed to death on July 23 at the Jerusalem home of the elderly couple for whom he worked as a caregiver.
Israeli authorities have reportedly arrested 31-year-old Avior Zaken, the grandson of the elderly couple. The Indian Express reported that an indictment has been filed against Zaken and that he remains in custody while legal proceedings are underway. These allegations are part of ongoing legal proceedings and the investigation remains subject to due process.
Acharya’s mortal remains were repatriated to India earlier this week. He is survived by his parents, wife and two children, according to the report. His family has sought justice and urged authorities to explore avenues for financial compensation.
The Indian Embassy said it has conveyed its condolences to Acharya’s bereaved family and is ready to provide all possible assistance. The mission also said it would continue monitoring the case and remain in contact with the concerned Israeli authorities as the investigation progresses.
The case has also highlighted concerns surrounding the safety of Indian caregivers working in Israel. According to The Indian Express, the Indian Embassy estimates that 14,000 to 20,000 Indian caregivers are working in the country.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of Acharya’s death, while the Indian mission remains engaged with Israeli officials and the victim’s family.
