The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) rescued all six fishermen aboard the distressed Indian Fishing Boat Manju Matha in a challenging Search and Rescue (SAR) operation off the Mangaluru coast after the vessel suffered severe flooding and hull damage in rough seas on June 29. The operation highlighted the Coast Guard's rapid response capability and maritime preparedness during the southwest monsoon.

At around 4 pm , ICG Ship Sachet intercepted a VHF radio distress call from the fishing boat, located about 33 nautical miles off the Surathkal coast . The vessel reported rapid flooding caused by hull damage, placing all six crew members in immediate danger. The Coast Guard immediately diverted the ship and reached the distressed vessel within about 90 minutes , despite rough seas, strong winds, poor visibility and approaching darkness.

The rescue team deployed remote operated lifebuoys , specially designed for operations in adverse weather, to recover the stranded fishermen safely. By 6 pm , all six crew members had been rescued without any injuries and were being transported to New Mangalore Port for safe disembarkation, medical assessment and handover to the concerned authorities.

Reports identified Manju Matha as a Udupi-registered fishing vessel. The Indian Coast Guard also released video footage of the operation, showing personnel carrying out the rescue amid high waves and turbulent weather.

The successful mission underscored the Indian Coast Guard's commitment to safeguarding lives at sea by combining advanced rescue technology with the courage, training and professionalism of its personnel during demanding maritime emergencies.
