Indian Documentary 'Rivers of Memory' Selected for Amsterdam Film Festival Competition
Indian filmmaker Shishir Jha’s documentary 'Rivers of Memory' has been selected for the Envision Competition at the 39th International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), where it will have its world premiere during the festival’s November 12-22 edition.
The 72-minute film is among 13 titles competing in a section dedicated to bold cinematic storytelling and innovative filmmaking approaches. Its selection places the Indian production alongside documentaries from countries including Cuba, Belgium, Canada, Switzerland and Hong Kong.
The Envision Competition celebrates filmmakers who experiment with visual language, narrative structures and cinematic form to present fresh perspectives on the world. Rather than relying solely on conventional storytelling, the selected films explore how creative filmmaking choices can shape audiences’ understanding of their subjects.
For 'Rivers of Memory', the selection marks an opportunity to introduce Jha’s work to an international documentary audience at one of the world’s leading festivals dedicated to non-fiction cinema.
The 2026 edition of IDFA will feature 253 titles from 80 countries across its official programme, bringing together filmmakers exploring diverse subjects and storytelling techniques. The festival will open with the world premiere of 'White Tiger Column', directed by Robert Mentov, Dwight Jantzi and Bryan Dickie. The documentary follows young recruits undergoing 45 days of training with Myanmar’s resistance movement.
Founded in 1988, IDFA has developed into a major international platform for documentary filmmakers, showcasing works that examine social and political realities, personal histories, cultural identities and artistic expression.
The Envision lineup includes 13 films, with 'Rivers of Memory' representing India among an internationally diverse selection. The competition’s emphasis on distinctive visual approaches makes it a platform for filmmakers seeking to push the boundaries of documentary storytelling.
The festival will run in Amsterdam from November 12 to 22, with its 2026 awards ceremony scheduled for November 19. The selection of 'Rivers of Memory' adds an Indian production to this year’s global documentary showcase, giving the film its international premiere at a prominent gathering of documentary filmmakers and audiences.
