An Indian national has been arrested by the UK National Crime Agency (NCA) following the interception of a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker in the English Channel , in a major sanctions enforcement operation targeting Russia’s wartime oil exports.

The vessel SMYRTOS was boarded during a coordinated six-hour mission involving Royal Marine Commandos , the NCA, Royal Navy units, and RAF support aircraft. The operation, authorised by Prime Minister Keir Starmer , has been described as the UK’s first direct interdiction of a sanctioned shadow fleet tanker.

Officials confirmed that a 38-year-old Indian national was detained on suspicion of sanctions offences under Russia regulations . He remains in custody for questioning, and authorities have not yet filed formal charges.

His identity, role on the vessel, and employer have not been disclosed, as the investigation remains ongoing. UK authorities have also not confirmed whether he held operational, technical, or administrative responsibilities aboard the ship.

The tanker remains anchored off the Dorset coast under surveillance, while environmental and security checks are conducted. Around 25 crew members, including Indian and Georgian nationals, are on board and are assisting investigators.

The SMYRTOS is believed to be part of Russia’s shadow fleet of over 700 ageing vessels , used to bypass sanctions by disguising ownership, switching flags, and concealing oil origins. Reports indicate the ship was carrying large volumes of Russian crude linked to sanctioned exports.

UK officials said the fleet plays a key role in sustaining Russia’s war economy in Ukraine. Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis called the operation a significant blow to sanctions evasion networks, while Prime Minister Keir Starmer said it sends a clear message that those backing the war “cannot hide”.

Investigations into the vessel’s ownership structure, cargo routing, and suspected violations are continuing, with further enforcement actions possible.
