An Indian national died due to medical complications aboard a merchant vessel docked at a port in Oman, prompting Indian diplomatic authorities to coordinate efforts for the swift repatriation of his mortal remains.

According to the Indian Embassy in Muscat, the deceased, Nishanth Uirthanathan , passed away while on board the MT Celestial , which is currently stationed at Duqm Port in Oman. The embassy confirmed the incident in a statement shared on social media on Saturday.

The mission said Uirthanathan died due to medical complications , though no further details regarding his condition were immediately disclosed. His mortal remains remain on the vessel as authorities complete the necessary formalities.

The embassy stated that it has been in continuous contact with the ship management company and other relevant stakeholders to facilitate the process. Arrangements are being made for the early repatriation of the mortal remains to India , it added.

The Indian mission also conveyed its condolences to the bereaved family and assured assistance throughout the process.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the welfare and healthcare challenges faced by seafarers working aboard commercial vessels, particularly when medical emergencies occur far from home. Maritime workers often spend extended periods at sea, where access to specialised medical care can be limited, making timely emergency response and support mechanisms critical.

Indian diplomatic missions regularly coordinate with shipping companies and local authorities in such cases to ensure consular assistance, legal clearances, and the dignified return of deceased nationals to their families.
