Indian sport suffered a devastating loss on Friday as Jaspal Rana , one of the country’s greatest shooters and among its most respected coaches, passed away at the age of 49 following cardiac complications.

According to officials, Rana breathed his last at a Delhi hospital on Thursday night. His death comes shortly after he reportedly underwent medical treatment after falling ill during the Indian contingent’s return journey from the ISSF World Cup in Munich . He was hospitalised upon arrival in New Delhi and underwent a procedure to treat a cardiac blockage, but his condition later deteriorated.

Rana’s passing has sent shockwaves across India’s sporting fraternity.

A child prodigy, he won his first national level gold medal at just 12 years of age before emerging as one of India’s most decorated shooters. His international breakthrough came in 1994 , when he captured gold medals in the 25 metre pistol event at both the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games , ending a long wait for Indian shooting success.

One of the defining moments of his career came at the 2006 Asian Games , where he delivered a memorable campaign with three gold medals and one silver , while also equalling the world record of that period.

After stepping away from competition, Rana built an equally remarkable legacy as a coach. He became a driving force behind India’s rise in pistol shooting and mentored a generation of elite athletes.

His most celebrated contribution came in guiding Manu Bhaker to her historic two bronze medals at the Paris Olympics . He also helped shape shooters such as Saurabh Chaudhary, Anish Bhanwala, and Chinki Yadav .

Awarded the Dronacharya Award in 2020 , Rana leaves behind a sporting legacy that will endure for generations.
