A 22-year-old Indian postgraduate student who had gone missing in the United States has been found dead , the Indian Consulate in San Francisco confirmed on Saturday.

The deceased, Saketh Sreenivasaiah, hailed from Karnataka and was pursuing a Master of Science degree at the University of California, Berkeley . He had been reported missing earlier this week. His backpack containing his passport and laptop was later found in a residential neighbourhood, prompting a search operation.

The Consulate said it is coordinating with local authorities and the family to complete formalities and arrange for the repatriation of his mortal remains . It also expressed condolences and assured full assistance.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of death . While preliminary inputs suggest the student may have been under emotional distress , officials have not stated whether the case involves suicide or foul play . No suicide note has been officially reported. Investigations are ongoing.

The incident has renewed concerns over the safety and mental well-being of Indian students in the United States. Official data indicates that more than 100 Indian students have died in the US since 2020 due to accidents, health issues, violent crimes and suspected suicides.

Experts cite factors such as academic pressure, loneliness, cultural adjustment challenges and limited access to mental health support as possible contributors. Student groups and community organisations have called for stronger counselling and support systems for international students.

The tragic death has once again highlighted the need for closer monitoring of student welfare and enhanced safety measures for Indians pursuing higher education abroad.
