The Indian women’s cricket team has been nominated for the prestigious 2026 Laureus World Team of the Year Award after securing their maiden World Cup title, marking a historic achievement for Indian cricket on the global stage.

The nomination was confirmed by Laureus Sport on Tuesday. It is a landmark moment as the team has become the first women’s cricket side to receive a nomination for this award. The recognition celebrates their exceptional performance in the tournament, highlighted by the record-breaking feat of registering the highest successful run chase (339 runs) in women’s ODI history during their semi-final victory against Australia.

Led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur , the squad delivered consistent performances throughout the competition before clinching the final against South Africa to secure the championship. Their triumph not only brought global acclaim but also triggered nationwide celebrations, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announcing a cash reward of Rs 51 crore for the team in recognition of their historic success.

The Indian team is nominated alongside elite international teams, including the England women’s football team, European Ryder Cup squad, Paris Saint-Germain, and McLaren Formula 1 team . The award highlights excellence across sports disciplines and is decided by the Laureus World Sports Academy , comprising legendary athletes who vote for the winners.

India has previously seen individual athletes nominated in major categories, including Vinesh Phogat (2019), Neeraj Chopra (2022), and Rishabh Pant (2025) .

The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony at the Cibeles Palace in Madrid on April 20 , marking the third consecutive year the city hosts the event.
