Three civilians were killed and at least 14 others injured in a mass shooting early Sunday outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden , a crowded bar on West Sixth Street in downtown Austin, Texas, authorities said, as federal and local officials investigate the attack as a possible act of terrorism.

The suspected gunman, 53‑year‑old Ndiaga Diagne , a naturalized US citizen originally from Senegal, was shot and killed by police at the scene after firing from his SUV and then on foot with a rifle. Officers arrived within about a minute of the first emergency call.

Police identified the deceased as 21‑year‑old Savitha Shan , a dual‑degree senior at the University of Texas at Austin known for academic excellence and student leadership, 19‑year‑old Ryder Harrington , a Texas Tech University student and fraternity member, and 30‑year‑old Jorge Pederson , who died after being taken off life support.

Fourteen people were taken to hospitals, with several initially in critical condition; some have since been released. Emergency workers noted a rapid response that likely limited further casualties.

Investigators found items linked to extremist symbolism, including clothing with the Iranian flag and the words “Property of Allah,” and are exploring whether geopolitical tensions following recent U.S. and allied actions in the Middle East could be related, though officials emphasize it is too early to confirm a motive. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and the National Counterterrorism Center are assisting in the ongoing probe, reviewing thousands of hours of video and interviewing hundreds of witnesses.

The tragedy has deeply affected the Austin community, with memorials at the site and vigils planned for the victims as supporters pay tribute and authorities continue to piece together motive and circumstances.
