India’s 2036 Olympic Dream Faces Crucial Test as IOC Sets New Host Selection Roadmap
India's ambitious pursuit of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games has entered a decisive phase after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved a revamped host selection process that promises greater transparency, stricter financial scrutiny, and a clearer roadmap for aspiring nations.
Under the new framework approved during the IOC's 146th Session in Lausanne , the final decision on the host of the 2036 Olympics is expected to be taken in mid-2029 , giving countries like India a defined timeline as they prepare one of the most significant sporting bids in their history.
The most notable change is the introduction of a new stage called Strategic Dialogue , which will sit between the existing Continuous Dialogue and the final Targeted Dialogue phases. The IOC says the reform is aimed at providing greater clarity for candidate nations while ensuring stronger financial and operational commitments before a country reaches the final stages of evaluation.
Former Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović , who chairs the Future Host Commission , said the changes were designed in response to feedback from potential hosts and IOC stakeholders seeking a more transparent process.
According to the revised structure, interested nations will be shortlisted in March 2027 to enter the Strategic Dialogue phase. During this stage, bidders will be required to respond to the IOC's Future Host Questionnaire and submit core financial guarantees , demonstrating their ability to support the massive organisational and infrastructure demands of the Olympic Games.
Countries will also be evaluated on cost management strategies , project delivery timelines, and long term planning. The Future Host Commission will conduct site visits and closely monitor progress before deciding which candidates move forward.
India is already engaged in the Continuous Dialogue stage after submitting its formal Letter of Intent in 2024. The country is hoping to bring the Olympics to Ahmedabad , a city that has emerged as the centerpiece of India's sporting infrastructure ambitions.
However, the competition remains intense. Qatar is widely regarded as India's strongest rival, while Turkey and South Africa are also expected to be serious contenders in the race.
Following the Strategic Dialogue phase, shortlisted candidates will advance to the Targeted Dialogue stage in 2028, where they must provide a comprehensive set of legal and financial guarantees. The IOC Executive Board will then identify a preferred host, with IOC members voting on the final decision in 2029.
The announcement presents both opportunity and challenge for India. While the revised process provides greater certainty, it also raises the bar for financial preparedness , infrastructure readiness , and long term planning . For a nation eager to establish itself as a global sporting powerhouse, the next three years could prove pivotal in determining whether the Olympic flame arrives on Indian soil in 2036.
