India’s Biggest-Ever Chess Contingent Takes on Magnus Carlsen at Esports World Cup

India will field its largest-ever chess contingent at the Esports World Cup as Grandmasters Nihal Sarin, Aravindh Chithambaram, Pranesh M and Arjun Erigaisi prepare to take on an elite international field in Paris from August 11 to 15.

The four Indians will be chasing a share of the USD 1.5 million prize pool in a star-studded competition headlined by world number one and defending champion Magnus Carlsen.

Nihal, Aravindh and Pranesh will represent S8UL Esports, while Arjun will compete under the banner of Gen.G Esports. The field also includes top names such as Hikaru Nakamura, Alireza Firouzja, Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Hans Moke Niemann.

Nihal, Pranesh and Arjun have earned direct berths in the Group Stage through their performances in the 2025-26 Champions Chess Tour. Aravindh, meanwhile, secured his place through DreamHack Atlanta and will begin his campaign in the Play-In stage.

The expanded Indian presence marks a major step forward from last year's tournament, when only Nihal and Arjun represented the country. Nihal reached the quarterfinals after qualifying through the Last Chance Qualifier, while Arjun finished fourth after entering through the Champions Chess Tour.

The Chess competition at EWC 2026 will feature a revamped two-phase format. The Play-In will involve nine players in a double-elimination bracket, with the leading performers advancing to the 16-player Group Stage.

The Group Stage will comprise two groups of eight, with the top four from each group progressing to the Playoffs. The knockout rounds will then feature increasingly longer matches, with four-game quarterfinals and six-game semifinals.

The champion will ultimately be crowned following a Grand Final contested over three sets, adding another layer of pressure to what promises to be a high-profile battle between the world's leading chess stars.

For India, the tournament offers a chance not only to challenge Carlsen and the global elite but also to underline the country's growing influence in the rapidly expanding world of competitive esports chess.
