India’s Construction Leaders Put Growth, Profitability and Innovation in Focus
India’s construction and infrastructure industry is entering a crucial phase in which financial resilience, technological adoption and international competitiveness are becoming as important as project execution. The 24th BKT Tyres Construction World Global Awards (CWGA) 2026, held at Aurika, Mumbai International Airport, on October 15, recognised companies and individuals across construction, engineering, infrastructure and project innovation. The ceremony, part of the India Construction Festival 2026, presented 45 honours, celebrating achievements across the sector.
The awards recognised Larsen & Toubro (L&T) as the Largest and Most Profitable Construction Company of the Year, while NCC, Kalpataru Projects International and Afcons Infrastructure featured among the fastest-growing construction firms. The event also highlighted Indian companies’ positions in international contracting and design rankings, reflecting the industry's growing global ambitions.
The Union Budget 2026–27 allocated ₹12.2 lakh crore for public capital expenditure, reinforcing the government’s emphasis on infrastructure-led growth. Such investment can support demand for highways, transport networks, utilities, public infrastructure, industrial facilities and urban development. However, translating financial allocations into completed projects depends on timely approvals, sound project preparation, efficient procurement and sustained private investment.
Construction companies continue to face challenges from rising labour and material costs, project delays, cautious private investment and fluctuations in road-project awards. These pressures can affect profitability and working capital, even when companies report growing revenues. In this environment, businesses must demonstrate their ability to control costs, deliver projects efficiently and generate cash while meeting contractual commitments.
Cash Generation Takes Centre Stage
Pratap Padode, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of ASAPP Info Global Group, explained that the fastest-growing construction companies were assessed through a six-year financial evaluation, followed by a jury review of qualitative factors. These included governance, business strategy, resilience, management capability and the quality of growth. A notable feature of the 2026 assessment was the increased emphasis on cash profits relative to operating revenue.
Padode summarised the principle with the statement, “Cash is capability.” The emphasis reflects the financial realities of construction, where companies must frequently spend on labour, equipment and materials before receiving payments against project milestones. Delayed payments and working-capital requirements can strain businesses despite a healthy order book. Strong cash generation gives companies greater flexibility to invest in technology, withstand market disruptions and pursue sustainable expansion.
The awards therefore sought to recognise not simply rapid growth, but also the ability to maintain financial discipline and effective management while navigating an increasingly complex business environment.
Fastest-Growing Construction Companies Honoured
The awards recognised companies across four size-based categories. In the Prime category, SPML Infra secured first place, followed by Vascon Engineers and GPT Infraprojects. The Medium category included Patel Engineering, Ceigall India, Varindera Constructions, Ahluwalia Contracts and J. Kumar Infraprojects, without individual numerical rankings in the published results.
In the Large category, Cemindia Projects ranked first, followed by Dineshchandra R. Agrawal Infracon and Dilip Buildcon. The Ultra Large category was led by NCC, with Kalpataru Projects International in second place and Afcons Infrastructure in third.
L&T received the award for the Largest and Most Profitable Construction Company of the Year. The Person of the Year 2026 – Private Sector honour was jointly presented to Vneet S. Jaain, Managing Director of Adani Green Energy, and Manish Mohnot, Managing Director and CEO of Kalpataru Projects International. Their recognition highlighted leadership across major infrastructure and energy-related businesses.
Indian Companies Strengthen Their International Presence
The awards also highlighted Indian and India-linked companies featured in the Engineering News-Record (ENR) Top 250 International Contractors ranking. L&T secured 11th place, followed by Shapoorji Pallonji and Company at 60, Elsewedy Electric at 66, Afcons Infrastructure at 145, Global MEP at 179, Gönüç İnşaat at 212 and Cemindia Projects at 244.
In the ENR Top 225 International Design Firms ranking, Sidara Group secured ninth place, followed by L&T at 22, Dorsch Consult (India) at 31, Archetype Group at 60, Tata Consulting Engineers at 73, RINA Consulting SpA at 110 and Gestion Integral del Suelo – GIS KSA at 195. These rankings measure international contracting and design activity, offering a perspective on companies’ global reach rather than their overall domestic size alone.
International competitiveness will depend on more than ranking positions. Technical expertise, financial strength, quality standards, reliable delivery and the ability to navigate different regulatory environments will remain important for Indian firms seeking overseas opportunities.
Innovation, Digital Intelligence and Project Excellence
The 30th edition of the Construction World Annual, released at the event, carried the theme Infrastructure Reset and featured contributions from 27 industry leaders. Discussions focused on technology, project preparation, talent and the changing requirements of infrastructure development.
Digital engineering, Building Information Modelling, automation and data-led project monitoring can improve coordination, identify delays and support better resource planning. However, their effectiveness depends on reliable data, trained personnel and sound implementation. The event also showcased IMPACCT, ASAPP Info Global Group’s business intelligence platform. CEO Tanveer Padode presented the platform, which tracks more than 150,000 projects across India, covering transportation, utilities, public infrastructure, buildings and factories from concept to completion.
The project awards recognised achievements across several segments. Dr Prabhakar Baranwal of Godrej Properties was named Project Manager of the Year. Kalpataru Projects International ranked first in Project Innovation of the Year, while Engineers India secured second place. Phenix Construction Technologies won Construction Project of the Year, and Jakson Infra was named Emerging Company of the Year. GMMCO received the Integrated Solution Provider award, while Kalpataru Projects International was recognised for International Project of the Year.
In Product Innovation of the Year, Nippon Paint India secured first place, followed by The House of Abhinandan Lodha. L&T Construction received recognition in the airport-project category, Ashoka Buildcon won the roads honour, and Kalpataru Projects International received the real-estate project award. Dr Er Sonali Nasikkar of The House of Abhinandan Lodha was named Woman in Construction, while CASE Construction Equipment won Construction Equipment of the Year.
Building a Safer and More Sustainable Industry
As infrastructure development expands, companies must balance speed and profitability with quality, worker safety and environmental responsibility. Proper equipment maintenance, fall protection, worker training, material inspections and emergency preparedness are essential to reducing construction-site risks. Efficient material use, responsible waste management and appropriate lower-carbon technologies can also support more sustainable development. Although the CWGA awards recognise business and project achievements, they should not automatically be interpreted as certifications of individual projects’ safety performance.
The event was presented by BKT Tyres, with Autodesk as the Powered by partner and Afcons Infrastructure as the Co-powered by partner. Gold partners included Dineshchandra R. Agrawal Infracon, Kalpataru Projects International, GMMCO, L&T, Cemindia Projects and JSW Better Everyday. Vascon Engineers and J. Kumar Infraprojects were Silver partners, while Shyam Steel Industries, Gulf Oil and Varindera Constructions were Associate partners. ENR was the association partner, IMPACCT served as Business Intelligence Partner, and Construction World, Equipment India and Infrastructure Today were the official media partners. Falguni Padode, Co-Founder and Group Managing Editor, delivered the vote of thanks.
The 2026 awards underscored that the next phase of India’s construction growth will depend on financial discipline, technological capability, skilled teams and reliable project delivery. With substantial public investment supporting infrastructure development, the opportunity remains significant. The challenge is to convert that opportunity into timely, high-quality projects that strengthen India’s infrastructure and create lasting economic value.
