India’s Hockey World Cup Hopes Hang By A Thread After 1-3 Loss To Netherlands

India’s Hockey World Cup semi-final hopes have been pushed to the brink after a 1-3 defeat to reigning Olympic champions the Netherlands, leaving the team needing a huge win over Argentina and a favourable result elsewhere to stay alive.

India produced a disciplined and impressive first-half performance in Amstelveen on Saturday, keeping the Dutch attack under control and preventing them from scoring. The Indian defence stood firm, while the midfield did well to disrupt the Netherlands’ possession.

The hosts created opportunities, including several penalty corners, but India survived the pressure. India also had chances of their own, with Dilpreet Singh and Rajinder Singh threatening inside the circle, although neither side could break the deadlock before halftime.

The match changed after the break. The Netherlands finally opened the scoring in the 41st minute when Duco Telgenkamp deflected the ball into the net. TJep Hoedemakers then doubled the lead in the 51st minute.

India responded immediately. Captain Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner in the 52nd minute to make it 1-2 and briefly raise hopes of a comeback.

But those hopes disappeared quickly. Thijs van Dam restored the Netherlands’ two-goal advantage in the 55th minute after India lost possession, leaving goalkeeper Mohit with little chance.

The result leaves the Netherlands through to the semi-finals with six points, while Argentina and England have three each. India remain without a point in the second round after also losing to England.

India now faces a daunting equation. They must beat Argentina by at least five goals on Monday and also need the Netherlands to defeat England.

The task is enormous, but India’s World Cup campaign is not over yet. They need their biggest performance of the tournament, and some help from the Dutch, to keep their semi-final dream alive.
