India’s Unemployment Rate Eases To 5% In August, Rural Joblessness At 4.1%

India’s unemployment rate fell to 5 per cent in August, its lowest level in six months, with the improvement driven largely by better labour market conditions in rural areas, government data showed on Tuesday.

According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) monthly bulletin for August 2026, released by the National Statistics Office (NSO), unemployment among people aged 15 years and above declined marginally from 5.1 per cent in July to 5.0 per cent in August.

The improvement was sharper in rural areas, where unemployment fell to 4.1 per cent from 4.5 per cent in July, its lowest level since January 2026. Urban unemployment remained broadly stable at 6.8 per cent, compared with 6.7 per cent in July.

The labour force participation rate (LFPR) also increased. Overall LFPR for people aged 15 years and above rose to 55.6 per cent in August from 55.4 per cent in July. Rural LFPR increased to 58.2 per cent from 58.0 per cent, while urban LFPR was unchanged at 50.4 per cent.

The worker population ratio (WPR) strengthened to 52.8 per cent from 52.5 per cent in July, its highest level since March 2026. Rural WPR rose to 55.8 per cent from 55.4 per cent, while urban WPR remained at 47 per cent.

Year on year, overall LFPR rose 0.6 percentage point from 55 per cent in August 2025 to 55.6 per cent in August 2026. Rural LFPR increased 1.2 percentage points to 58.2 per cent, while urban LFPR fell 0.5 percentage point to 50.4 per cent.

Female workforce participation also improved. Overall female LFPR rose to 34.8 per cent from 34.4 per cent in July, with rural female LFPR increasing to 39.4 per cent from 38.8 per cent. Urban female LFPR remained broadly stable at 25.4 per cent.

Compared with August 2025, overall female LFPR rose 1.1 percentage points from 33.7 per cent. Rural female LFPR climbed 2 percentage points to 39.4 per cent, while urban female LFPR fell 0.7 percentage point to 25.4 per cent. Female WPR rose to 33 per cent from 32 per cent a year earlier.

Male unemployment fell for the third consecutive month, reaching 4.9 per cent in August from 5.4 per cent in May. Rural male unemployment declined to 4.3 per cent from 4.6 per cent in July, while urban male unemployment edged up to 6.1 per cent from 5.9 per cent.

Among women, overall unemployment fell for the second consecutive month to 5.1 per cent in August from 5.9 per cent in June. Rural female unemployment declined to 3.9 per cent from 4.3 per cent in July.
