India’s Winning Run Faces Gritty Bangladesh Test In Women’s Asia Cup Semifinal

Seven-time champions India will enter the Women’s Asia Cup semifinal against Bangladesh as overwhelming favourites, but Harmanpreet Kaur’s team knows that knockout cricket can quickly turn the script upside down.

The two sides meet in the first semifinal in Dubai on Thursday, with the match carrying plenty of significance on and off the field. The recent strain in India-Bangladesh relations has added an extra layer to a cricketing rivalry that has often produced intense contests.

India have been almost flawless in the tournament, finishing top of Group A with victories in every match. Their most emphatic performance came against Pakistan, who were bowled out for just 55 before India completed a comfortable seven-wicket win.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, have reached the last four through determination rather than dominance. Their 34-run win over the UAE secured their semifinal place, although a collapse to 55 for 6 exposed their batting vulnerabilities before Sharmin Akhter and captain Nigar Sultana helped them recover.

For Bangladesh, the top order must withstand India’s varied attack, while bowlers such as Rabeya Khan, Nahida Akter and Marufa Akter face the difficult task of containing India’s aggressive batters.

India have won the Asia Cup seven times, while Bangladesh claimed their lone title in 2018. With the final now one victory away, India will be expected to advance — but Bangladesh will be hoping to produce the tournament’s biggest upset.
