IndiGo Celebrates 20 Years, Sets Sights on 550-Aircraft Fleet by 2030

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has completed 20 years of operations, celebrating its journey from a single-aircraft carrier to one of the world’s fastest-growing airlines while outlining ambitious plans for global expansion and fleet growth.

IndiGo began operations on August 4, 2006, with its inaugural flight between Delhi and Imphal via Guwahati. Over two decades, the airline has expanded to a fleet of more than 430 aircraft, serving over 140 destinations, including 97 domestic and 40-plus international locations. It now operates nearly 2,200 daily flights and has carried almost 900 million passengers since its inception.

To mark the milestone, the airline has launched special airport and onboard celebrations, unveiled a commemorative brand booklet titled "20 Years of Connecting the Dots", and introduced a revamped edition of its in-flight magazine, Hello 6E.

Managing Director Rahul Bhatia said IndiGo remains committed to making air travel accessible, affordable and reliable, while continuing to invest in people, technology and operational capabilities to support India's growing aviation sector.

The airline said its growth has paralleled India's aviation expansion, with nearly 90% of the country's population now living within 100 kilometres of an IndiGo-served airport. Through ATR aircraft operations and participation in the UDAN regional connectivity scheme, IndiGo has strengthened connectivity to smaller cities and towns.

The carrier is also accelerating its international ambitions. After placing a record order of more than 500 Airbus narrow-body aircraft in 2023, it subsequently ordered 60 Airbus A350 wide-body aircraft, with international operations expected to contribute around 40% of total capacity by FY2030.

Looking ahead, IndiGo plans to operate around 3,000 daily departures, expand its fleet to more than 550 aircraft, and serve nearly 200 million passengers annually by 2030, reinforcing its goal of becoming a globally competitive airline while supporting India's emergence as a major aviation hub.
