IndiGo To Suspend Manchester Flights From August 31 Amid Rising Costs And Airspace Constraints

IndiGo has announced that it will temporarily discontinue its direct services to Manchester in the United Kingdom from August 31, less than a year after launching the route, citing escalating operational costs and persistent international airspace restrictions .

The airline currently operates three weekly flights from Delhi and four weekly flights from Mumbai to Manchester. Introduced in July 2025, the service formed part of IndiGo’s strategy to strengthen its presence in long-haul international markets. With the suspension, there will be no direct air connectivity between Indian cities and Manchester .

According to the airline, continuing airspace constraints have significantly increased flight durations, leading to higher fuel consumption and operating expenses. IndiGo said broader industry challenges, including geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, foreign exchange volatility, and restricted air corridors , have pushed costs far beyond initial projections.

As part of the move, the airline will return one Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft leased from Norse Atlantic Airways. IndiGo had damp leased six Dreamliners to accelerate its entry into European long-haul markets ahead of the induction of its own Airbus A350 aircraft.

Abhijit Dasgupta, Senior Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management, said the Manchester route had received an encouraging response from travellers. However, the combination of longer flying times and sharply rising costs made the service commercially difficult to sustain.

The decision highlights a wider trend across the global aviation sector, where rising fuel costs, geopolitical disruptions, airspace restrictions and currency fluctuations are forcing airlines to reassess route profitability. Airlines worldwide are increasingly modifying schedules, reducing frequencies and suspending routes that have become economically challenging due to external factors.

Despite the Manchester suspension, IndiGo continues to expand its international network, which now spans more than 40 overseas destinations. The airline is also planning to reduce domestic flight operations by around 12-15 per cent during the September quarter amid soaring fuel prices linked to the West Asia crisis and softer travel demand.
