Indore School Food Poisoning: 110 Students Fall Ill, Kitchen Sealed Over Expired Food
Around 110 students of a private school in Madhya Pradesh's Indore allegedly suffered symptoms of food poisoning after consuming lunch served on the campus, prompting authorities to launch an investigation and seal the school's kitchen after discovering expired food items and other safety lapses.
The incident occurred at Shishukunj International School's Jhalaria campus on Bypass Road, where students from Classes 1 to 5 reportedly complained of stomach pain and vomiting on Saturday evening after having their regular lunch earlier in the day.
Following complaints from concerned parents, the district administration carried out an inspection of the school's kitchen and food storage facilities. During the probe, officials found 10 packets of spices and two packets of namkeen that had crossed their expiry dates , raising concerns about food safety standards at the institution.
Authorities collected 23 samples of food ingredients and cooked meals from the kitchen and sent them to a laboratory for testing to determine the exact cause of the illness. Pending the outcome of the investigation, the administration has sealed the school kitchen until further orders .
Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Deepak Chauhan said that more than 100 children experienced symptoms including vomiting and abdominal pain, with several continuing to feel unwell the following day. While many parents consulted doctors, some who are medical professionals treated their children at home.
Officials said that no child is currently hospitalized , and all affected students are reported to be stable. The incident has reignited concerns over food quality control, hygiene practices, and compliance with safety regulations in educational institutions serving meals to large numbers of students.
School authorities stated that more than 3,200 people consume food on the campus daily and maintained that strict quality standards are followed. The school has also initiated its own inquiry into the matter.
The administration said further action will depend on the laboratory findings and the outcome of the ongoing investigation into the alleged food poisoning incident.
