INS Sudarshini Carries India's Maritime Legacy to US 250th Celebrations
The Indian Navy's sail training ship INS Sudarshini is representing India at the United States' landmark 250th Independence Anniversary celebrations , underscoring New Delhi's growing maritime diplomacy and strengthening naval ties with Washington.
Currently stationed in Baltimore, Maryland , the vessel is participating in the prestigious SAIL 250 commemorative events, one of the largest international maritime gatherings in recent decades. The celebrations form part of the broader Freedom 250 initiative marking 250 years of American independence, culminating in the Fourth of July festivities.
Prior to reaching Baltimore, INS Sudarshini took part in the Sail 250 Virginia celebrations in Norfolk from June 19 to 23, joining tall ships from around the world and representing India in the renowned Parade of Sail and City Crew Parade . The ship later transited through the historic Chesapeake and Delaware Canal en route to Baltimore.
The significance of the event extends far beyond a ceremonial port visit. The wider SAIL 250 programme is expected to bring together ships and sailors from dozens of nations, with organisers projecting participation from up to 32 countries and nearly 15,000 sailors . Maritime heritage exhibitions, naval exchanges, cultural programmes and public ship tours are being held across multiple American cities as part of the celebrations, making it one of the most prominent global maritime events of the decade.
INS Sudarshini's participation comes under Lokayan 26 , the Indian Navy's flagship maritime outreach mission launched from Kochi on January 20 this year. The ambitious 10-month transoceanic expedition aims to cover more than 22,000 nautical miles , visiting 18 ports across 13 countries spanning West Asia, the Mediterranean, Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and North America.
Having already sailed over 13,000 nautical miles in five months , the vessel has made successful port calls in Oman, Egypt, Malta, France, Morocco, Spain, Cape Verde and Antigua before commencing the American leg of its voyage. The expedition promotes maritime cooperation, international goodwill and India's centuries-old seafaring traditions.
The Indian Navy said the voyage embodies the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and supports India's MAHASAGAR vision of fostering security, growth and partnership across maritime regions. More than 200 Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard trainees are expected to undergo sail training during the mission, gaining valuable experience in traditional seamanship and long-distance ocean navigation.
Built by Goa Shipyard Limited , INS Sudarshini has sailed over 1.4 lakh nautical miles during its service and continues to serve as a floating ambassador of India's maritime heritage. Its presence at the United States' Semiquincentennial celebrations highlights India's expanding global maritime footprint and the deepening partnership between the world's two largest democracies.
