INS Sudarshini docks at Alexandria, strengthening India-Egypt maritime ties
INS Sudarshini, the Indian Navy’s three-masted sail training ship, arrived at the historic port city of Alexandria on 1 March 2026 , marking a key milestone in its transoceanic expedition, Lokayan-26 . The vessel recently completed its northbound transit through the 193-kilometre Suez Canal , a historic maritime gateway connecting East and West, providing trainees onboard with a vital hands-on learning experience.
The visit underscores the “Bridges of Friendship” initiative, celebrating the longstanding maritime and cultural partnership between India and Egypt . Over centuries, the two nations have shared strong economic and cultural links, which in recent years have expanded to include defence and maritime cooperation. INS Sudarshini’s port call reaffirms India’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations and promoting collaboration in the maritime sector.
While exact numbers for INS Sudarshini’s expedition haven’t been officially disclosed, global crises can increase the operational budget significantly, sometimes by 10–20% depending on fuel , logistics, and insurance pressures.
Upon arrival, the ship was welcomed by officials from the Egyptian Navy and the Indian Embassy. The ship’s Commanding Officer held discussions with R ear Admiral Mahmoud Abdelsattar, Commander of Alexandria Naval Base . During the stay, the crew is scheduled to engage in professional exchanges, community outreach programmes, and cultural activities aimed at fostering mutual goodwill, enhancing naval interoperability, and strengthening India-Egypt maritime cooperation.
