'Inspirational': Djokovic Hails Serena's Grand Wimbledon Comeback
As the tennis world eagerly awaits Serena Williams' long anticipated return to Wimbledon , Novak Djokovic has described the American legend's comeback as "inspirational" and "epic", saying her determination has left a lasting impression on everyone around her.
Williams, now 44 , is preparing to play her first singles match at the All England Club in four years after accepting a wildcard entry into the tournament. She will face Maya Joint in the opening round on Tuesday, marking her return to Grand Slam singles action after stepping away from the sport following the 2022 US Open .
Speaking ahead of Wimbledon, Djokovic revealed that he has closely observed Williams' preparations and believes her commitment reflects just how seriously she is taking this comeback.
"I see her in the gym more than I think I saw her during her prime," Djokovic said, adding that it clearly shows her desire to give herself the best possible chance of succeeding.
The 24 time Grand Slam champion also spoke warmly about Williams' extraordinary journey, saying he has always admired not only Serena's achievements but also the careers of both the Williams sisters.
"I've always admired her career, her journey and her story. Of course, Venus' as well," Djokovic said, calling Serena's return one of the most inspiring stories in the sport this season.
Williams' last appearance at Wimbledon came in 2022 , when she was beaten in the opening round by Harmony Tan . Shortly afterward, she announced that she was "evolving" away from professional tennis following her farewell campaign at the US Open, where she reached the third round.
Since then, Williams welcomed her second daughter in 2023 and largely stayed away from competitive tennis. Her decision to return has therefore generated enormous excitement across the tennis community.
Initially, Williams accepted a wildcard to compete in women's doubles alongside her sister Venus Williams , who is 46 . She later surprised fans by also entering the singles draw, instantly becoming one of the biggest talking points of this year's Wimbledon.
The seven time Wimbledon singles champion could set up a blockbuster third round clash with defending champion Iga Swiatek , provided both players progress through the opening rounds.
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka also welcomed Williams' return, saying it is a positive moment not just for the tournament but for the sport as a whole.
Sabalenka said she was excited to see Williams compete again and admired the fact that the American great wanted her children to witness her playing at the highest level. She added that Serena's presence naturally draws greater attention to tennis, making the tournament even more special for players and fans alike.
With one of the greatest champions in the history of the game making an unexpected return, anticipation is building at Wimbledon. Whether Williams can produce another memorable run remains to be seen, but her comeback has already captured the imagination of the sporting world and reminded fans why she remains one of tennis' most influential figures.
