International Day of Yoga 2026 was celebrated across continents on Sunday as governments, lawmakers, diplomats, and community organisations joined millions of participants in observing India's ancient wellness tradition. Marked under the theme "Yoga for Healthy Ageing," the 12th edition of the global event showcased yoga's growing role in promoting physical health, mental well being, and social harmony while highlighting India's expanding cultural influence worldwide.

From New York's iconic Times Square to major public venues across Europe, Asia, and North America, thousands gathered for mass yoga sessions. Celebrations were organised at landmark locations including Times Square in the United States, public squares in Seoul, community venues in Budapest, diplomatic missions across Europe, and United Nations linked events, reflecting the worldwide reach of the observance.

In the United States, Delaware Governor Matthew Meyer proclaimed June 21, 2026, as International Day of Yoga in the state and encouraged residents to adopt yoga for healthier lifestyles. The proclamation described yoga as a 5,000 year old practice from India that integrates the mind, body, and spirit while fostering physical strength, flexibility, mental clarity, and emotional balance. The governor also recognised local celebrations organised by the Indian American Community Delaware in partnership with the Consulate General of India in New York.

The United Kingdom marked the occasion through parliamentary recognition of yoga's benefits for health and well being, while Hungary, South Korea, Switzerland, and several other countries hosted public events and community programmes. Around the world, Indian missions coordinated celebrations that brought together local residents, policymakers, yoga practitioners, and members of the Indian diaspora.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi , addressing India's national observance, described yoga as a global movement that continues to connect people beyond borders.

The International Day of Yoga was established by the United Nations in 2014 after India proposed the resolution, which received the support of a record 175 member states.
