IPL Link Helped SA20 Become a Huge Success: Dale Steyn
Former fast bowler Dale Steyn has praised the impact of the SA20 league , saying it has played a key role in bringing cricket back to life in South Africa after a difficult phase for the sport.
Speaking ahead of the fifth season of the SA20 , Steyn said the tournament has revived strong fan interest and helped stadiums regain healthy crowds across the country. He said the league has grown steadily over its first four editions and continues to enjoy strong support from spectators.
Steyn also highlighted the strong link between South African cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL) , saying this relationship has been a major factor behind SA20’s success. He pointed out that Indian ownership in several franchises and the regular involvement of South African players in the IPL have strengthened cricket ties between the two nations.
According to him, this connection has also helped ensure better availability of top players for franchise cricket, allowing leagues like SA20 to feature strong squads and consistent participation.
Steyn further responded to suggestions of taking SA20 matches outside South Africa, saying such a move would not be ideal. He argued that the league should remain rooted in its home base, where fan support has been strong since its inception.
He added that South Africa already benefits from the global popularity of the IPL , and there is no need to shift SA20 games abroad. In his view, the league is working well in its current structure and should continue focusing on building its local fan base.
Steyn concluded that SA20 has succeeded because it has stayed connected to its home audience and delivered a product that fans have embraced season after season.
