Iran Cleared for World Cup as US Approves Visas for Players and Staff
Iran’s participation in the FIFA World Cup has received a major boost after United States authorities approved visas for members of the country’s national football team, ending weeks of uncertainty surrounding their entry into the tournament host nation.
According to US officials, visas have been cleared for Iranian players, coaches, trainers and support personnel , paving the way for the team to travel from its temporary training base in Tijuana, Mexico , to the United States for its opening matches. The development removes a significant obstacle that had cast doubt over Iran’s World Cup preparations amid heightened political tensions in the region.
Iran’s road to the tournament has been far from straightforward. Ongoing hostilities involving Iran, Israel and the United States had complicated logistical arrangements, particularly the processing of travel documents. The uncertainty forced the Iranian squad to shift its planned training camp from Tucson, Arizona , to Tijuana , located just across the US border.
The team had earlier assembled in Antalya, Turkey , before moving to Mexico as officials worked to secure the necessary clearances. While players awaited US visas, Mexico had already approved entry permits through its embassy in Ankara .
The decision is expected to bring relief to Iranian football authorities , who had repeatedly insisted that all members of the delegation should receive permission to travel. Concerns over participation had intensified earlier this year when senior officials in Iran suggested that competing in the tournament might not be possible because of the geopolitical situation.
Adding to the uncertainty, former remarks from US President Donald Trump questioning Iran’s participation had sparked debate over whether the team would be able to take part in the competition. Iranian football authorities, however, remained firm in their stance that the country could not be excluded from the World Cup.
Iran is scheduled to begin its campaign against New Zealand in Inglewood, California , on June 15 before facing Belgium six days later. The team will then travel to Seattle for its final group stage fixture against Egypt on June 26 .
With the visa issue largely resolved , attention can finally shift from diplomacy and paperwork to football, allowing Iran to focus on its bid to progress deep into the tournament despite months of disruption and uncertainty.
