Iran vows to defend sovereignty against “excessive demands” in US nuclear talks

Amid escalating tensions in West Asia, nuclear talks between the United States and Iran began on Friday in Muscat, Oman. Delegations from both countries are meeting to discuss reviving a nuclear agreement and reducing bilateral tensions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that while protecting their national interests, Iran is prepared to defend its sovereignty if faced with any unjust demands or coercive measures.

Oman is acting as a mediator to improve Tehran–Washington relations. On Friday, Araqchi met with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi to review progress in the talks. Araqchi emphasised that Iran seeks to resolve issues through diplomatic channels and will not compromise on its security . Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi praised Iran’s goodwill and responsible approach during the discussions.

Key disagreements continue between the two nations. Iran insists that talks should focus solely on its nuclear programme , while the U.S. wants to include issues such as Iran’s ballistic missile development and regional influence . U.S. representatives, including Middle East Envoy Steve Vitkoff and former Trump aide Jared Kushner , are participating in the discussions. Iranian Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fatali , noted that the second round of talks has begun and that the results are awaited.

Iran has faced a deep internal crisis over the past year. Protests across the country in December 2025 and January 2026, coupled with a declining economy, have increased pressure on the government. Since June 2025, the Iranian rial has lost half its value, making economic stability a key priority for the country in these talks. Iran has stated that lifting sanctions , which have severely impacted its economy, is its main demand.

Meanwhile, the U.S. is showing a strong stance. President Donald Trump described the talks as a “ final warning ,” stating that severe consequences are inevitable if an agreement is not reached. Adding to tensions, the U.S. warship USS Abraham Lincoln is patrolling the Arabian Sea. Analysts note that the Muscat talks are unfolding as a mix of diplomatic efforts and high-stakes warnings , with potential to either bring peace to West Asia or, if unsuccessful, further exacerbate regional instability.
