Iraq's sacred cities turned into a sea of black on July 8 as funeral processions carrying the coffin of Iran's slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei wound through Najaf and Karbala , drawing what officials expect to be one of the largest crossborder mourning gatherings in recent memory.

The remains arrived at Najaf International Airport on Tuesday night, received by senior Iraqi politicians and religious figures in a formal ceremony before dawn. The public procession then began early Wednesday morning from the Sadr Hospital overpass , stretching across a six kilometre route that culminated at the Shrine of Imam Ali , one of the holiest sites in Shia Islam. Hundreds of volunteer run stalls lined the path, handing out food and drinks to mourners who had travelled for hours, some overnight, just to be part of the crowd.

Mourners carried Khamenei's portrait alongside Iranian flags, while banners threaded political defiance into religious grief. One widely photographed sign read "the one who humiliated America," another simply declared "we bid you farewell." Chants invoking Hussein, the third Shia Imam martyred in Karbala over thirteen centuries ago, echoed through the crowd, deliberately linking Khamenei's killing to that ancient story of sacrifice and injustice, a narrative Iranian state messaging has leaned on heavily throughout the six day funeral.

Iraqi cleric Muqtada al Sadr personally welcomed pilgrims into the country, calling Iraq an essential destination for the faithful during this moment. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed his attendance, joining what Iranian officials say could eventually draw over one hundred country delegations across the full week of ceremonies. Locals interviewed on the ground described the scale as overwhelming, with one Basra resident travelling specifically to Najaf saying he expected millions to show up simply because of how Khamenei died.

Notably absent yet again was his son and successor, Mojtaba Khamenei , who has not been seen publicly since taking over as supreme leader, deepening ongoing questions about his health and authority. His three other sons, Mostafa, Meysam and Masoud, stood in his place throughout the Iraq leg of the journey.

From Karbala, where a second procession will culminate at the shrines of Imam Hussein and Abbas , the coffin is scheduled to head back to Iran, ultimately reaching Mashhad for burial on Thursday, closing out a funeral Iranian authorities hope will rival the historic scale of Ayatollah Khomeini's 1989 farewell.
