Ireland Shock India By 34 Runs, Register Historic First Win Over T20 Champions
Ireland produced a sensational upset as they defeated reigning T20 world champions India by 34 runs in the first T20I at Stormont, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series and recording their first-ever victory over India in any format .
Batting first, Ireland posted a competitive 182/9 , built around a composed half-century by skipper Lorcan Tucker (50 off 36 balls) . After a shaky start, Ireland recovered through crucial partnerships, particularly a valuable stand involving Curtis Campher and George Dockrell , which lifted them beyond the 180-mark.
India’s bowlers began strongly, with Harshit Rana (3/24) leading the attack with disciplined back-of-length deliveries. Arshdeep Singh (2/28) and Axar Patel (2/33) also struck at key moments, while Ireland were restricted to just 36 runs in the powerplay after losing early wickets. However, a late surge from Delany (49) and Dockrell ensured a strong finish, with Delany’s explosive hitting against Prasidh Krishna proving decisive in the final overs.
Chasing 183, India collapsed to 148 all out , despite a brilliant counterattack from Abhishek Sharma , who smashed a 20-ball fifty to briefly keep India in the hunt. He struck freely during the powerplay, helping India reach 68/3 in six overs , but lacked support from the other end.
India’s top order faltered as Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, and Shreyas Iyer fell cheaply, with Iyer’s debut as full-time T20 captain ending in disappointment. Ireland’s bowling unit, led by Matt Hollard (3/28) and debutant Jai Moondra (2/26) , maintained tight lines and exploited a pitch that assisted pace and variation.
The middle order failed to stabilise the chase as Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube also fell without making an impact. Ireland continued to apply pressure with disciplined lengths and sharp fielding, forcing regular breakthroughs.
The innings ended when Arshdeep Singh was dismissed by Matthew Humphreys , sealing a memorable victory for the hosts.
Overall, Ireland’s structured bowling plan, patience, and execution under pressure outclassed India’s aggressive but inconsistent batting approach, marking one of their most significant wins in international cricket.
