Netflix is reportedly preparing to reduce its workforce by around 5%, with an announcement potentially coming as early as next week, as the streaming giant faces mounting pressure to sustain growth and compete for viewers and advertising revenue.

According to a report by Puck News, the proposed job cuts come at a time when streaming platforms are confronting growing competition from YouTube and traditional media companies, which are vying for audiences and a larger share of advertising spending.

Netflix had approximately 16,000 full-time employees at the end of last year. If the reported reduction goes ahead, the company could eliminate a significant number of positions as it reassesses its workforce and spending priorities. However, the reported plan has not been independently confirmed.

The potential cuts would mark a significant workforce restructuring since Netflix's major round of layoffs in 2022, when the company eliminated hundreds of jobs amid slowing growth and subscriber losses.

Since then, Netflix has sought to diversify its revenue streams beyond conventional monthly subscriptions. The company has expanded its advertising-supported subscription plans, invested in live programming and explored gaming as part of efforts to attract new audiences and strengthen its business.

Advertising has become an increasingly important component of its strategy, enabling Netflix to offer lower-cost plans while opening up an additional source of revenue. However, the company faces intense competition for both viewers and advertisers, particularly from YouTube, which benefits from a vast library of creator-driven content and a strong advertising business.

The reported job cuts underline a broader challenge confronting the streaming industry: balancing heavy investments in original content, technology and new services with tighter cost controls and the need for sustainable profitability.

For Netflix, the challenge is no longer simply attracting subscribers. It must also persuade advertisers to invest, retain viewers in an increasingly crowded entertainment market and ensure that its expanding business delivers consistent returns.

If implemented, the proposed workforce reduction would signal another effort by the streaming giant to adapt its operations to a rapidly changing media landscape.
