IT Minister Lokesh Invites Russian Institute To Explore Rare Earth And Magnet Manufacturing In AP
Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh has invited Russia's leading research organisation, Giredmet Institute , to explore opportunities for establishing advanced manufacturing and processing facilities in the state, with a particular focus on rare earth elements and strategic minerals.
During a high-level meeting with representatives of the Moscow-based institute on Sunday, Lokesh highlighted the potential of international technology partnerships in strengthening India's critical minerals ecosystem and accelerating industrial growth in Andhra Pradesh.
According to an official statement, the minister urged the institute to examine the feasibility of setting up a Deep Processing and Rare Earth Element Refining Hub in the mineral-rich regions of Visakhapatnam and Srikakulam . He also proposed collaboration in establishing a Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) magnet manufacturing facility in Nellore , aimed at supporting India's rapidly expanding electric vehicle and renewable energy sectors.
Lokesh suggested leveraging Giredmet's advanced processing technologies to develop a full-cycle rare earth permanent magnet manufacturing ecosystem , which could cater to the growing demand from electric mobility and wind energy industries.
The minister further invited the institute to partner with Andhra Pradesh in setting up specialised laboratories for metallurgy, ultra-pure semiconductor materials, and electronic materials research using the plug-and-play infrastructure available in the state's emerging technology corridors. He also sought collaboration in recovering strategic rare metals from industrial and mining waste through advanced recycling and extraction technologies.
Founded in Moscow in 1931, Giredmet operates within the science and technology ecosystem of Rosatom and is engaged in research related to critical minerals, rare earth processing, battery recycling and advanced materials. The institute is currently exploring opportunities for cooperation with India in these sectors.
Earlier in the day, Lokesh visited Moscow's renowned Atomic Energy Museum , one of Russia's largest museums dedicated to nuclear science and technology.
Spread across seven floors and covering nearly 25,000 square metres, the museum showcases the evolution of the Soviet nuclear programme, modern nuclear technologies and future scientific innovations. Opened in November 2023, the facility features interactive exhibits, science laboratories and guided educational tours.
Museum officials informed the minister that the centre has welcomed more than 3.5 million visitors from over 80 countries and can accommodate up to 2,100 visitors simultaneously . Developed jointly by the Moscow city government and Rosatom, the museum aims to promote public understanding of nuclear science, its history and its peaceful applications.
