The New York Knicks have been crowned NBA champions for the first time since 1973, ending one of the longest title droughts in professional sports and igniting celebrations across one of the world's most passionate sporting cities.

The Knicks sealed their historic triumph with a tense 94-90 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday night, wrapping up the NBA Finals in five games and delivering the franchise's third championship. For generations of fans who had endured disappointment, near misses and rebuilding years, the moment represented far more than just another trophy.

As the final buzzer sounded, emotions spilled onto the court and into the stands. Team owner James Dolan , unable to contain his excitement, lifted the championship trophy before it was even formally presented.

"Hey New York! I'm sorry it took so long! But here we are," Dolan shouted, capturing the mood of an entire city that had waited more than five decades for this moment.

The championship also brings an end to a lengthy drought for New York's traditional major professional sports teams. While the city has celebrated titles from the New York Liberty in the WNBA and New York City FC in Major League Soccer in recent years, this marks the first NBA, NFL, MLB or NHL championship for New York since the New York Giants' Super Bowl victory in 2012 .

What makes the Knicks' title run even more remarkable is the resilience they displayed throughout the playoffs. The team won 13 consecutive games during one stretch of the postseason and produced one of the most memorable comebacks in NBA Finals history when they erased a 29-point deficit in Game 4 at Madison Square Garden.

For longtime supporters, the triumph serves as a powerful redemption story. Since their previous championship, the franchise had cycled through 24 head coaches and more than 400 players. Legendary figures such as Patrick Ewing , Bernard King , Allan Houston and Carmelo Anthony all wore the Knicks jersey but were unable to deliver the elusive title.

The franchise's last appearance in the NBA Finals before this season came in 1999, when they were defeated by the Spurs. Twenty-seven years later, the same opponent stood in their way. This time, however, history unfolded differently.

A major part of the Knicks' revival has been the arrival of Jalen Brunson , whose leadership helped transform the team into a genuine contender. Under first-year head coach Mike Brown , New York completed a remarkable rise from being one of the league's worst-performing franchises just a few years ago to standing atop the basketball world.

Now, a new championship banner will soon hang from the rafters of Madison Square Garden , carrying a simple but powerful message: 2025-26 NBA Champions .

For New York, the wait was agonisingly long. For the Knicks and their fans, it was worth every second.
