Indian-origin theoretical physicist Jainendra K. Jain has become the first person of Indian origin to receive the prestigious Wolf Prize in Physics , earning global recognition for his groundbreaking discovery of composite fermions , a theory that revolutionised the understanding of the fractional quantum Hall effect.

The award was presented by Israeli President Isaac Herzog at a state ceremony held in the Knesset in Jerusalem on Thursday.

Jain was honoured for developing the concept of composite fermions in 1989 while working as a postdoctoral researcher at Yale University. His theory provided an elegant explanation for the fractional quantum Hall effect, a phenomenon that had puzzled physicists studying the behaviour of electrons in ultra-thin semiconductor materials subjected to strong magnetic fields.

The discovery transformed condensed matter physics and continues to influence research into exotic quantum states and quantum computing. The sequences of fractions predicted by his theory are now widely known as the Jain sequences .

Established in 1978 by the Wolf Foundation , the Wolf Prize is awarded annually in fields including physics, chemistry, medicine, mathematics, agriculture and the arts. Widely regarded as one of the world's most prestigious scientific honours, the prize has often been seen as a precursor to the Nobel Prize, with several Wolf laureates later receiving Nobel recognition.

Born in Sambhar, Rajasthan, Jain is currently the Founding Director of the Lodha Theoretical Physics Institute and serves as a professor at Pennsylvania State University in the United States. He has authored more than 250 scientific papers and has been elected to leading scientific academies, including the US National Academy of Sciences.

Expressing gratitude for the honour, Jain said the award was a recognition of a journey that began in rural Rajasthan and was driven by a lifelong passion for physics.
