India has strongly protested the attacks by the US Navy in the Gulf region that resulted in the deaths of three Indian mariners, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar taking up the matter directly with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio .

In a post on X, Jaishankar said he spoke with Rubio and conveyed India's deep concern over the incident. He reiterated New Delhi's strong objection to the attacks, stating that " such lethal actions against commercial shipping are not justified ."

The diplomatic intervention follows a series of incidents off the coast of Oman this week involving vessels carrying Indian crew members. According to reports, three ships with Indian sailors on board came under attack in the Gulf region. One of the incidents on Wednesday led to the death of three Indian seafarers, triggering outrage and concern in India.

The Indian government has responded by escalating the matter through diplomatic channels. Apart from Jaishankar's conversation with Rubio, New Delhi also summoned the Charge d'Affaires of the US Embassy to formally register its protest and seek an explanation regarding the circumstances that led to the deaths of the Indian nationals.

The episode has drawn attention to the growing security challenges in the Gulf and around the Strait of Hormuz , one of the world's most important maritime trade routes. Thousands of commercial vessels pass through the narrow waterway every year, making stability in the region crucial for global trade and energy supplies.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump linked the recent tensions to Iran, accusing Tehran of carrying out drone attacks against Indian ships leaving the Strait of Hormuz. In a social media post, Trump described the alleged attacks as "totally unacceptable" and urged Iran to take immediate corrective action.

Despite the competing claims surrounding the incidents, India's immediate focus remains on the loss of its citizens and the protection of commercial shipping. The deaths of the three mariners have added a sensitive dimension to India-US ties, prompting New Delhi to seek accountability and assurances regarding the safety of Indian seafarers operating in conflict-prone waters.

As diplomatic engagements continue, India is expected to closely monitor developments and press for greater clarity on the events that led to the tragic loss of life.
