Jama Masjid Encroachment Drive Begins: MCD Clears Parks, Public Spaces After HC Order

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has launched a demolition and encroachment-removal drive around Jama Masjid, acting on directions from the Delhi High Court to identify and clear illegal constructions and encroachments near the historic Mughal-era monument.

MCD teams began work on Monday morning, targeting public spaces and parks occupied by encroachments. Officials said at least three parks in the area are being cleared. Authorities have not publicly identified the parks by name or detailed individual structures being demolished.

The action follows a Delhi High Court direction requiring the MCD to survey illegal constructions and encroachments in and around Jama Masjid and take appropriate steps for their removal. The civic body is therefore carrying out the present operation as part of its compliance with the court’s directions.

The drive is significant for the management of the Jama Masjid precinct, a prominent Mughal-era landmark. The monument attracts large numbers of worshippers and visitors, while its surrounding lanes form a busy commercial area. Removing encroachments from public land and parks is expected to restore civic spaces and improve access and movement around the heritage site.

Officials have so far described the targets broadly as structures and other encroachments occupying public spaces. Reports do not establish that all shops or commercial establishments face demolition currently; the stated focus is on illegal constructions and encroachments identified through the civic and court-directed process

Authorities have also made law-and-order arrangements during the operation. Police personnel have been deployed in adequate numbers around the area to prevent any breach of peace as MCD teams carry out the clearance.

The security presence is particularly important because Jama Masjid is a high-footfall religious and tourist destination, with crowded lanes and substantial commercial activity nearby. The coordinated civic and police response is intended to ensure that enforcement proceeds peacefully and without disruption to worshippers, visitors and residents.

The operation underscores the challenge of balancing heritage-area conservation, public-space protection and civic enforcement in one of Delhi’s most densely visited historic neighbourhoods.
