Jamia Shifts Semester Exams Online, Extends Virtual Classes Until November 24

Jamia Millia Islamia has shifted its end-semester examinations to online mode and extended virtual classes until November 24, citing the prevailing situation on campus and concerns over students’ safety and security, according to a university order.

The order, dated October 28 and issued by Registrar Prof. Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi, followed a meeting of deans, heads of departments, directors and other university officials to review the campus situation. The meeting concluded that conditions were not conducive to conducting academic activities on campus.

Under the revised academic schedule, online teaching for the odd semester will continue until November 24. Practical, fieldwork, project, viva and minor project examinations will be held online from November 25 to November 30, while end-semester theory examinations are scheduled from December 1 to December 24.

The university will observe winter vacation from December 25, 2026, to January 12, 2027. Classes for the even semester are scheduled to commence on January 13, 2027, the order stated.

The latest decision extends an earlier arrangement under which online classes were scheduled to continue until November 8. The revised order covers both teaching and end-semester examinations.

The changes come amid ongoing student protests demanding the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU) and the announcement of an election schedule. The agitation began with a hunger strike and has continued as students press for the revival of the union.

The university has alleged damage to campus property during the protests, while the agitating students have continued to demand student union elections.

The registrar has directed all deans, heads of departments and directors to ensure compliance with the order and make the necessary arrangements for conducting online classes and examinations.
