Jammu and Kashmir make history, reach Ranji Trophy final after 67 years
In a historic moment for cricket in the region, Jammu and Kashmir scripted a stunning victory over two-time former champions Bengal to reach the Ranji Trophy final for the first time in their 67-year journey.
Chasing a modest target of 126 set by Bengal for the 2nd innings, J&K completed the task in 34.4 overs , thanks to a resilient partnership between Vanshaj Sharma (43 not out) and Abdul Samad (30 not out) , who guided the team past the finish line with calm determination.
The semifinal win was built on the back of a sensational performance by pace spearhead Auqib Nabi , who took nine wickets across both innings, crippling Bengal’s chances and setting up the historic chase.
J&K first entered the Ranji Trophy in the 1959-60 season and had rarely been considered serious contenders. The team made headlines during the 2013-14 season , when they qualified for the knockouts for the first time in over a decade.
On Tuesday, at stumps on day three, J&K were 43/2 . Early on day four, they lost batsman Shubham Pundir (27) and skipper Paras Dogra (9) . However, the duo of Vanshaj and Samad steadied the innings, putting together a 55-run partnership that ultimately sealed a landmark victory for the side.
Brief scores:
Bengal:
328 and 99 in 25.1 overs
Jammu and Kashmir:
302 and 126/4 in 34.4 overs (Vanshaj Sharma 43, Abdul Samad 30)
Jammu and Kashmir will now face defending champions Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy final, scheduled from February 24 to February 28, 2026 , aiming for their maiden title.
