Jannik Sinner Ends 2026 Season Due to Knee Inflammation

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has ended his 2026 season early as he continues treatment for inflammation in his right knee, ruling him out of the remaining tournaments, including the ATP Finals in Turin.

The 25-year-old Italian has not played since defeating Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon final on July 12 to successfully defend his title and claim his fifth Grand Slam trophy. He subsequently missed the North American hardcourt swing, including the US Open, and later withdrew from the Shanghai Masters.

Sinner announced the decision on Tuesday in a video message, saying he had consulted his doctors and needed a course of treatment for his knee.

“Me, together with the doctors, have decided that I need a course of treatment for my knee, which means that the 2026 season is officially over,” Sinner said. He added that he needed to think about his long-term career and would do everything possible to return at full fitness.

Sinner's management team said the treatment was being undertaken now to give him enough time to recover before beginning preparations for 2027.

The decision means Sinner will miss the Paris Masters and ATP Finals, where he is a two-time defending champion. He will also be unavailable for Italy at the Davis Cup Final 8.

His absence could also affect the ATP No. 1 ranking. Zverev, currently second, has an opportunity to close the gap during the remaining tournaments of the season. Sinner's return is now expected to come in 2027, potentially at the Australian Open, which begins in January.
