Japanese PM's Assam Visit May Feature Modi-Takaichi Summit In Guwahati
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is likely to visit Assam on a three-day trip beginning July 1, with reports indicating the possibility of a summit-level meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Guwahati.
The proposed visit was mentioned by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during the launch of the pilot project Blue Valley Cluster – Fragrances, Flavours and Ayush , being implemented in collaboration with the European Union. Sarma said there is a possibility that the two Prime Ministers could hold high-level talks in the state, although an official announcement on the summit is yet to be made.
According to the Chief Minister, the visit would further strengthen Assam's role in the growing partnership between India and Japan. If the meeting takes place, it is expected to focus on economic cooperation, infrastructure development, investment, connectivity and regional collaboration .
The possible summit comes at a time when Assam is increasingly being positioned as a key gateway to Southeast Asia under India's Act East Policy . Hosting a meeting between the leaders of India and Japan would highlight the state's rising strategic and economic importance in New Delhi's engagement with the Indo-Pacific region.
Japan remains one of India's most significant strategic and economic partners, with bilateral cooperation spanning sectors such as transportation, manufacturing, technology, renewable energy and infrastructure. Japanese investments have contributed to several major development projects across the country, while both nations continue to deepen cooperation on regional connectivity and economic growth.
Observers believe that a summit in Guwahati would not only reinforce the strong India-Japan partnership but also showcase the Northeast's growing role in international diplomacy and economic development.
While details of the agenda and itinerary have not yet been officially confirmed, the reported visit is expected to draw considerable attention given its diplomatic and strategic significance.
