With an aim to strengthen the accuracy and integrity of voter databases, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to roll out the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Jharkhand from June 30 , triggering a month-long statewide verification exercise that will involve door-to-door visits, social media campaigns and extensive voter outreach.

Reviewing the preparations on Saturday, Jharkhand Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) K Ravi Kumar directed all District Election Officers (DEOs) , deputy commissioners and officials from the education and information departments to intensify awareness efforts ahead of the exercise. He stressed the need to maximize voter participation through the #JharkhandSIR campaign and instructed all Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELCs) and district social media handles to actively share awareness material from June 30.

The SIR is part of the ECI’s Phase-III nationwide electoral roll revision programme , designed to ensure that voter lists remain updated, error-free and inclusive. Under the exercise, around 32,000 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct door-to-door verification across Jharkhand between June 30 and July 29 , helping voters fill out enumeration forms and update their records. The exercise is expected to cover nearly 2.64 crore electors in the state.

According to election officials, the revision aims to address issues arising from migration, urbanisation, unreported deaths and duplicate registrations while ensuring that all eligible citizens are included in the electoral rolls. Voters whose details could not be matched with records prepared during earlier intensive revisions will be able to submit the required information through BLOs during the enumeration process.

The CEO's office has announced a detailed timeline for the exercise. The draft electoral rolls will be published on August 5 , after which voters can file claims and objections from August 5 to September 4 . Following scrutiny and disposal of applications, the final electoral rolls will be published on October 7, 2026 .

Jharkhand's exercise forms part of a much larger national effort covering 16 states and three Union Territories , where more than 3.94 lakh BLOs will verify nearly 36.73 crore voters through house-to-house visits. Once completed, the programme will cover a substantial portion of the country's electorate.
