Jharkhand Lightning Tragedy: 14 Killed, Several Injured as Thunderbolts Strike Three Districts

At least 14 people were killed and eight others injured after lightning strikes hit multiple areas of Jharkhand on Tuesday, triggering grief across three districts, Giridih, Dumka and Latehar.

The highest number of casualties was reported from Giridih, where nine people lost their lives in separate lightning incidents. Three deaths were reported from Dumka, while two people were killed in Latehar.

In Giridih district, seven people were killed and three others injured in lightning strikes across different police station areas under the Khorimahua subdivision, officials said.

According to Khorimahua Sub-Divisional Police Officer Amarendra Kumar, the most tragic incident took place in the Deori police station area, where five people died and three others were injured. The victims were reportedly sitting together after playing when lightning struck the area. Four of those who died were between 18 and 20 years old.

Two more deaths were reported from the Gawan and Naudiha police station areas, with one person killed in each location.

In Dumka, three people died and four others, including a child, suffered injuries in separate lightning strikes reported from the Ramgarh and Hansdiha police station areas, police said.

The situation was also serious in Latehar, where two people were killed in separate incidents under the Chandwa and Sadar police station areas. A woman was critically injured after being struck by lightning, officials added.

Latehar Superintendent of Police Kumar Gaurav confirmed the deaths and said rescue and relief measures were being carried out.

Lightning-related deaths are frequently reported in Jharkhand during the monsoon season, when thunderstorms become common across the state. Authorities have repeatedly advised residents to avoid open fields, trees and isolated areas during thunderstorms to reduce the risk of lightning strikes.
