Julián Álvarez was left out of Atletico Madrid’s squad for their La Liga opener against Malaga on Wednesday, adding another twist to the Argentine forward’s uncertain future at the Spanish club.

Álvarez had informed Atletico during the offseason that he wanted to leave, but the club has made it clear that it does not intend to negotiate his release. His omission from the opening-day squad therefore comes at a time when speculation over his future remains high.

However, Atletico coach Diego Simeone played down any suggestion that Álvarez’s absence was linked to the transfer situation. Speaking on Tuesday, Simeone said the 26-year-old was not yet physically ready to feature in the match at the Estadio Metropolitano.

Simeone also stressed that he continues to count on Álvarez for the season, describing him as the team’s best player and indicating that he expects the forward to return for Sunday’s league clash against Villarreal.

The Argentine’s situation will remain closely watched as Atletico begin their campaign. Álvarez joined the Madrid side with major expectations and has established himself as an important part of Simeone’s plans, making his desire to seek a move a significant development for the club.

For now, Simeone’s comments suggest Atletico are not preparing to part ways with their star forward. Whether Álvarez remains committed to the club, however, could become one of the key storylines of the early La Liga season.

Also missing from Atletico’s squad for the opener were new signing Cristian “Cuti” Romero, who joined from Tottenham, and injured striker Alexander Sorloth.

With Álvarez potentially back in contention against Villarreal, the weekend could offer the first indication of whether the forward’s immediate future lies on the pitch in Atletico colours or whether the transfer uncertainty will continue to dominate the headlines.
